Time is running out – this is what Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker seems to be telling us. Evening descends over Europe. It is time to strike to the bone. Walking, breathing, listening, leaping out of the torpor. Letting the body exult. The choreographer reconnects with the minimalist essence of her early work, enriched by thirty years of research on choreographic counterpoint and the subtlety of the gesture.

De Keersmaeker takes on one of the more fascinating musical masterpieces of the late 20th century: Gerard Grisey’s Vortex Temporum (‘‘Whirlpool of Time”), for six instruments, which takes its inspiration from the temporal repetition of American  rhythmic loops and the architectural solidity of German classicism. Mixing on the stage, the Rosas dancers and the Ictus musicians, paired one to one, develop long spirals of dance and music where instrumental gesture and choreographic gesture seek to merge.

Everything repeats, and everything returns, endlessly, but it is the quality of the time lived that transforms: De Keersmaeker here reaches the summit of an art of the purified.
