The painting of Watteau is a true lesson in music: gallant, because it is ever poised to reveal the discourse of love; luxuriant as the pastoral landscapes through which parade the sounds of the accordion, the horn, the hurdy-gurdy; allusive in the delicious chiaroscuro of foresworn oaths … A lesson? It is rather an entertainment, a “fête galante”, to the rhythm of village dances, brunettes, amorous whispers and other pastoral pleasures that we owe to Boismortier, Chedeville, Couperin or Rebel, then the height of fashion in the 18th century.
