Holed up in the bordello of Madame Irma, the Bishop and the Hangman, the Judge and the Chief of Police smoother in troubled pleasures the cries of insurrection that threaten to overrun the town… The Hungarian composer Peter Eötvös, a student of Stockhausen, has drawn from Jean Genet’s famous play an opera that plays on false pretences, served up with all the necessary insurrection by a young ensemble of the same name directed by Maxime Pascal, Le Balcon.
Opera in 10 scenes by Peter Eötvös (born in 1944), based on Le Balcon by Jean Genet (©Éditions Gallimard, 1968). Libretto by Françoise Morvan in collaboration with Peter Eötvös and André Marcowicz. Opera created in 2002 at the Aix-en-Provence festival.
